Currently we are experiencing a heat wave. While many people love the hot temperatures, my family avoids them.
Dont get me wrong, I am a big fan of the sun, not the heat. I prefer the temperature to stay below 73 degrees.
When we have several days in a row that hover above 80 degrees, my house holds the heat and makes sleeping difficult.
We don’t have extra money in the piggy bank that would allow for central air so we run a window unit for hours at a time. This works well for the downstairs where the main living takes place, but it is almost useless against the smothering heat upstairs in the bedrooms.
Days of interrupted sleep doesn’t work out well for most families and ours is no different; however, I am actually surprised that my son handles the shortened hours of sleep so well. In previous years, one late night bedtime would mean heightened sensitivities and a short fuse for the following day.
Today, my son met homeschooling friends for a video game and park visit, completed all of his school work and chores, and maintained a good disposition throughout the day until…
The presence of another too hot bedtime was the final straw. Honestly, I can’t say that I blamed him.
He couldn’t get comfortable despite the fan, the one sheet, and a cool cloth. Finally after I read far too late, he stopped fighting it and fell asleep.
I know that I am supposed to live in the moment and not dream my days away; however, as I sit here, tired of the sounds of the air conditioner or the dogs barking because of loud talkers jogging by, I am imagining the crisp but beautiful days of fall.
Those days will be here soon enough.
I’ve always wished we had a “sleeping porch” where we could get the nighttime breeze. We have central air, but it makes me very unhappy to run it, especially at night. It’s not just the cost, but being closed off from the rest of the world. It’s too much like winter, and reminds me of the winter days that are coming eventually when we’ll be cooped up in the house all the time. But I know how hard it is to sleep when you’re too hot. Hope you have a break in the weather soon! -Amy
I love the idea of a sleeping porch! Yes, the air conditioner keeps the temperature from being blistering but it does feel artificial and cut off.
Fall weather is my favorite as well. However after last winter, I find myself more patient with the heat this summer.
In actuality I am most content with 65 degrees to 75 degrees. A pretty small window of happiness 🙂
Your finicky!
That’s what I hear 🙂
I love summer like no other. But somedays in the heat of it I do find myself dreaming of sweaters and hot chai. It’ll be here before we know it!
You are so right 😉
